Its main function is to transfer motion from the wiper motor to the wiper arms so that the blades can move smoothly across the glass. Although it appears simple, it plays a critical role in ensuring clear visibility during rain, snow, or when the windshield is dirty.Typically, a wiper link is made of metal, such as steel or aluminum alloy, to provide strength and durability while keeping weight relatively low. The link is usually part of a linkage assembly that includes several rods and joints. These parts work together to convert the rotary motion of the motor into the oscillating, back‑and‑forth motion of the wiper arms. At each end of the link, there are joints or bushings designed to allow controlled movement while minimizing friction and wear.The design of a wiper link must balance rigidity and flexibility. In some designs, the link incorporates plastic or rubber bushings to reduce noise and absorb shock, improving comfort inside the vehicle.Maintenance and inspection of the wiper link are also important. Symptoms of a worn or damaged link include unusual noises, irregular or jerky movement of the wipers, or one wiper failing to move while the other still operates. Over time, exposure to water, road salt, and dirt can cause corrosion or wear at the joints. When this happens, replacement of the wiper link or the entire linkage assembly is often necessary to restore proper function.In modern vehicles, wiper links must work reliably with additional features such as variable speed control, intermittent operation, and automatic rain‑sensing systems. Even with these advanced controls, the basic mechanical role of the link remains the same: to ensure that power from the motor is transmitted accurately and consistently to the wiper arms.
